Chinedum Orji, son to the Abia State Governor, is reported to have escaped an assassination attempt after a single bullet was fired in the direction of his vehicle after an event organised by Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency in honour of his father in Umuahia.

Chinedum was said to be leaving the venue after the event, and was assisted in getting into his vehicle by his personal assistant John Ndubuka. Chinedum also called Ikuku had entered into the car when a single shot was fired in his direction. The bullet is said to have missed Ikuku but struck Ndubuka in the back and caused him to slump.

He was pronounced dead by doctors at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, where he was rushed to after the shooting.

Briefing journalists at the Government House on Sunday, Information and Strategy Commissioner, Eze Chikamnayo, said the incident “has left everyone, including the First Family and the people of the state, very sad”.

Abia State Police Commissioner, Adamu Ibrahim, ordered the State Criminal Investigations Department to fish out the suspected assassins, and three suspects who happen to be policemen have already been arrested.

Ndubuka’s seven month old pregnant wife had just concluded her NYSC programme and is said to be overwhelmed with grief.
