THE Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), has opposed the plan to impose an emergency rule in three states, contrary to the recent denial by the federal authorities.
The party through a statement by its national publicity secretary, Mr. Rotimi Fasakin listed the states as Borno, Yobe and Nasarawa, where scores of people have lost their lives due to insurgency lately.
In a statement entitled, National insecurity: Emergency rule not the answer, the CPC adduced reasons why it believed the plan to impose the state of emergency in the states was real.
While condemning all acts of violence and killings, the party emphasized that the crisis demanded more pragmatic approach, instead of a kick and start methodology.
It queried, “The question is: what is the new thing that an administrator will hope to achieve, given the present scenario of militarisation in these states? Should this not be interpreted as another knee-jack response of this administration to situations that require out-of-the-box thinking? Is this approach not to be interpreted as a pre-meditated consequence of ineptitude of this regime?”
Meanwhile, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has asked President Goodluck Jonathan to shelve the plan, if he has any, to impose a state of emergency on some of the northern states worst hit by the Boko Haram crisis, saying any such move can only be aimed at giving an undue advantage to the PDP instead of helping to end the crisis.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said if the imposition of emergency rule on the most affected states is the only viable option left for President Jonathan to tackle the crisis, then he should step down
