No fewer than 10 students were on Wednesday killed in a ghastly accident on Sheme-Kankara Road in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State, northwest Nigeria.
Four other students were injured.
The accident occurred when a truck conveying the students to Government Day Secondary School in Kankara town collided with an oncoming truck.
The Malumfashi Unit Commander of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Malam Tijjani Muhammad, said the accident occurred in the morning when the students were going to school, adding that the truck was also carrying timber.
According to him, the truck was coming from Sheme and going to Kankara while the other vehicle was from Kankara going to Sheme junction.
He said the rescued victims and the dead were taken to Kankara General Hospital.
An eyewitness, Malam Umar Tanko, said the victims were residents of different villages studying at Kankara and boarded vehicles daily on the road. Tanko said the students were sitting on top of the timber when the accident occurred, adding that logs of timber fell on them.
Also the Kankara General Hospital register indicated that the survivors and the dead had been evacuated by their respective families.
Government Day Secondary School, Kankara, was shut to mourn the dead students.
