Suspected armed robbers yesterday dismantled an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) belonging to a new generation bank located inside Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) Campus in Ondo State and carted away with undisclosed amount of money.
It was gathered that the bandits carried out their operation between the hours of 1:00am and 3:00am on the ATM opposite Olusegun Obasanjo Multipurpose Hall in the University.
Sources said the gunmen numbering about five and armed with two AK 47 riffles gained entrance into the campus through the pedestrian gate located at the southern part of the University.
Newsmen learnt that when the hoodlums got to where the ATM was located, they confronted two AAUA regular security men and three SHERIFF DEPUTY officers and tied them after to a stake.
It was gathered that the robbers got into the ATM room after using some electrical cutting tools.
According to a source, more of the bank ATMs would have been raided, as the traces of their actions were also seen at one of the old generation’s bank ATM.
A student of the institution who preferred anonymity said “we saw that they were making an attempt of opening the ATM machine belonging to one old generation when we got to the place this morning.
“But I think they could not successfully dismantle the ATM because time was not on their side again and they were afraid of being attack by the students who were sleeping during the time of the operation”.
Already, the management of the University, led by Prof. Femi Mimiko has visited the scene of the attack.
Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) ASP Wole Ogodo said no arrest has been made so far.
Ogodo said the robbers succeed in the new generation’s bank because it has no Anti Robbery Alarm.
He however assured members of the University community that the police was making frantic efforts to ensure that those who perpetrated the evil act are brought to book.
