Rescue workers in the province of Zhejiang, China, pulled a baby boy out of a sewer pipe after his mother reportedly flushed him down the toilet alive after birth.
The baby is out of danger and is receiving treatment at a local hospital, according to reports.
Firemen had to saw through a four-inch pipe located below a ceiling in order to reach the baby, but they were unable to extract him. They then took the section of the pipe to the hospital, where doctors spent two hours trying to break it open. Once they removed the baby, he was placed in an incubator.
According to Zhejiang News, the baby was found on Saturday, after a tenant heard crying coming from the public bathroom in an apartment complex and notified authorities.
The building’s owner said it was unlikely that the birth took place in the bathroom because there was no sign of blood or body fluids. He said that he was unaware of any women in the complex being pregnant.
On Tuesday, police said they had found the mother, who “was crying and was very sorry” for abandoning the baby. The Chinese daily Dushi Kuaibao cited a local official who said the mother was attempting to kill the child; however, after the mother was found, police only said the case was under investigation.
