SAMSON Siasia believes Nigeria’s stars of yesteryears failed to give a befitting memorial to Rashidi Yekini as evident in the poor turn-out in the first anniversary of the demise of the country’s record highest goal scorer.
Yekini died a year ago and on Thursday in Ibadan, just the trio of Siasia, Dimeji Lawal and Felix Owolabi, among a multitude of living football greats showed up at a memorial in honour of Yekini.
A memorial lecture and a book launch were held in honour of Yekini and Siasia chose to register his feelings towards the reaction to the late Yekini.
“It was not easy for me to drive from Bayelsa State down to Ibadan but this is an event for Rashidi Yekini, the best player I think Nigeria has produced and whose goals propelled the country to our first World Cup appearance at USA’ 94’’, he said.
Siasia hoped that there would be a better turn-out today for the football match to be played in the late Yekini’s memory but insisted that ex-footballers should have showed up at the lecture and book launch to demonstrate their love and loyalty to the player referred to as the goals’ king of Nigerian football.
‘’ I have huge regard I for Yekini and I had high expectation of a befitting anniversary for him but you can all see how scanty the hall is.
“It’s a shameful thing that a person of Yekini’s calibre can be celebrated in this nonchalant manner,” Siasia remarked
