SSS detains el-Rufai overnight

FORMER Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, yesterday reported at the Aso Drive Office of the State Security Service (SSS) to answer the invitation extended to him last Friday, even as an arrest warrant was given his lawyer.

Accompanied by his lawyer, one of his wives, Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and Senator Chris Ngige, El-Rufai said his arrest was politically-motivated in order to muzzle the opposition.

The SSS had invited El-Rufai over the alleged provocative statement he made concerning the 2015 elections at a public function in Abuja on January 22, 2014.

Speaking with reporters shortly before he went to the SSS Headquarters at 9.20 am, he said: “It is all about politics; it is all about 2015, this is just an attempt to intimidate and silence opposition for crying out that elections are likely to be rigged”.

He was later detained and has not been released as at press time.

On why he was being hounded, El-Rufai said: “I think because I sued the SSS for detaining me in Akwa, Anambra State, during the last gubernatorial election. I think that is the main reason, but then, I think they have to find other reasons for inviting me”.

“I am not even embarrassed, it happens in politics, people get arrested now and again especially if they are of the opposition, just to keep them quiet, even when they tell the truth.

“I will continue to speak and they will continue to arrest me until we get free and fair election in Nigeria”, he said.
