Gang-raped Girl, 18, Commits Suicide






Janet a victim of gang rape, has committed suicide in Amarata area of Yenagoa local government area, Bayelsa State.
The deceased, aged 18, a native of Oduali community in Abus/Odua local government area, Rivers State, was allegedly gang raped by three unidentified boys in the area.
it was gathered that the deceased who could not face the shame and stigma the incident attracted, decided to take her life.
According to family sources, the late Janet was last week reportedly gang-raped at gun point by three boys who forced her into an uncompleted building while she was running an errand for her older sister.


“The girl was visibly sad and devastated. She told her sister and the husband her experience. The sister’s husband, who is a pastor, asked her to describe any of her attackers and she described one of the boys. The boy was traced to his house but he had absconded. The pastor counselled her and promised to pursue the matter to a logical conclusion,” the source said.

Unknown to her sister and her husband, the distraught girl who had decided to take her life drank an insecticide, known as Sniper and was discovered while groaning in pains and rushed to the Glory Land hospital.
A family source said the deceased dropped a suicide note before taking the poisonous substance.

The spokesman of the police in the state, Mr Alex Akhigbe, who confirmed the incident, said the police had launched investigation into the alleged rape charges filed by the deceased’s family.
